Discover Antarctica and Tango in Buenos Aires
27.12.2010 – 12.1.2011

The experience of your lifetime: Discover the last untouched continent on a cruise to the “white planet”. It is the cruise of your lifetime!
Our starting point for this marvelous journey begins in Buenos Aires. Together we will attend Milongas held nightly in this cosmopolitan city, and if desired, take workshops from some of the best known tango Maestros. In addition to being considered the “birthplace of the Tango”, Buenos Aires is rich in charm and culture. Enjoy a city walk through the picturesque section of San Telmo, La Boca or shop in the trendy cosmopolitan Palermo Viejo area. In total, we stay six nights in “the Tango Capital”. From Buenos Aires, we fly to Ushuaia ,Tierra del Fuego, where our cruise starts.
Our journey will take us across the Drake Passage, escorted by albatross and petrels, to the magnificent scenery of the Antarctic Peninsula and its abundant summer wildlife of seals, penguins, and whales. To enrich our experience, MS Fram’s expert team of expedition staff and lecturers will offer presentations on the history, biology, and geology of Antarctica along the way. Come ashore with our team in sturdy Polar Cirkel boats for a close-up look at penguin colonies, modern research facilities, and historic sites. Marvel at the mountainous scenery and icebergs floating by from the comfort of the Passenger Bridge. Every view is a photographer’s dream and the long summer day means there is plenty of opportunity to take it all in. Join us for a voyage of exploration and discovery on the world’s newest explorer ship – MS Fram! Onboard MS Fram, there is a dance floor, so we can dance Tango while watching the unique scenery! Visiting the white continent, even in the relative luxury of a modern ship, still feels like an expedition - and a rare privilege.

Itinerary:
27.12.2010
individual flight to Buenos Aires

27.12.-2.1. Buenos Aires
Six overnight stays, breakfast included in a quaint bedandbreakfast in San Telmo. Quiet and centrally located, it offers a personal touch along with its an inner courtyard and a roof terrace. Together we will attend the most interesting Milongas and experience the flair which this city has to offer.

2.1. Buenos Aires/Ushuaia
Flight from Buenos Aires to the southernmost city in the world: Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego. Transfer and short sightseeing tour of Ushuaia on the way to the ship “MS Fram” for embarkation.
Once onboard here will be a welcome meeting and the Captain will present his officers and expedition staff. They will introduce you to the ship’s safety procedures and outline the program for the coming days.
In the evening we set a course through the scenic Beagle Channel for the Drake Passage and Antarctica.

2.1.-3.1.Drake-Passage
The Drake Passage is where the Atlantic and Pacific meet the Great Southern Ocean to create the Antarctic Convergence. During the crossing you can enjoy our onboard lecture series to learn more about the wonders of Antarctica. Tango at sea will enrich these days and whenever it is possible, we can dance onboard with beautiful views. Watch out for the first icebergs! In addition to spotting for the magnificent wandering albatross and other seabirds, the crossing features our lecture series focusing on the history, environment, and wildlife of Antarctica. Of course, we can also dance Tango onboard MS Fram during these days.

3.1.-10.1. Antarctica:
The continent is an endless white wilderness full of fantastic impressions of nature. We will learn the history of the great explorers as we travel in their footsteps and see the landscape as they saw it - unchanged, remote, and awe inspiring. Landings in Antarctica will vary from voyage to voyage and largely depend on the weather and ice conditions. Safety is always the first priority and the final sailing itinerary will be decided by the ship’s Captain during the voyage. We hope to sail to Deception Island, Lemaire Channel, Port Lockroy, Almirante Brown, Neko Harbour and Petermann Island. We may also try to land on sites like Half Moon Island with its chinstrap penguin rookery and Cuverville Island which has a large gentoo penguin population. Old abandoned whaling stations, idyllic bays filled with ice, rock and penguins will all be on the visiting list. Wherever we land, the experience will be breathtaking and unforgettable.
Our cruise to the Antarctica 2008/2009 was the best cruise we ever did!

10.-11.1. Drake-Passage
Sail across Drake Passage towards Cape Horn back to Ushuaia.
With our bow pointed north and unforgettable images and experiences in our souls, we are invited to a new understanding of the Antarctic.
The voyage from the Antarctic Peninsula to Ushuaia at the southern tip of Argentina is roughly 950 km (600 mi) or 40 hours sailing time in good weather. During the voyage north, we will continue our lecture series and recap our experiences of Antarctica.

11.1. Ushuaia/Buenos Aires
Transfer to the airport and flight to Buenos Aires.
